  • Stay Home Mom!

I suppose I have officially been a "stay-at-home mom" since Lily was born. But I think it’s only just now hit me. When Lily was a tiny baby I was busy packing and making preparations to move. Then I was busy working at camp while being a mom – Lily got toted around on my back as I washed camp dishes, did laundry and made beds, and even when I worked in the office.

    But now I’m home.

Really home - no extra jobs to do or camp programs to get involved in. Just me and Lily and the housework.

And I’m bored stiff! What on earth do these perfect stay-home moms do with themselves all day?

Lily gets me up every morning around 7:00am and by 10:00am or so I’ve got most of my household chores done. This weekend I even let my house get really messy, let the dishes pile up and laundry sit unfolded just so I’d have plenty to do on Monday. I was still done by 10:00!

I’d pick up one of my many hobbies but Lily would simply try to join in (and therefore make it impossible to do) or drag me away. Sometimes she lets me read while she plays and every so often I get to sneak away and use the computer without her begging to play a computer game. But mostly, my day consists of entertaining Lily and a few hours of household chores. Call me liberal, anti-motherhood, whatever - but quite frankly this job is pretty boring.

And I’m sure that right now there are some of you ready to rush to defend motherhood and staying at home. At the same time, there are others of you who are nodding in understanding cause you feel the same way. I’m coming to the conclusion that we are just all made differently and we each need to figure out what we are called to do.

For me, I’m pretty sure I’m not going to be a career mom. I doubt I’ll homeschool or stay home until my kids go to college. But that doesn’t make me a bad mother – it just means God’s leading me in a different direction.

    I’m cool with that.

  • The sister I never had

I always wanted a sister. I am secretly still mad at my parents for giving me only one brother. Both of my parents came from families with eight children and their family reunions, childhood stories, and sibling relationships seemed so much more interesting than mine could ever be. And even though my parents insist that it was not their decision to have only two children, I still feel a little deprived of the exciting family life that they had!

In this last year while living at Bethel Camp, Ruthie became like a sister to me. We have so very much in common and think so similarly that we might as well have grown up in the same house. To top it all off, we even look alike – enough alike that our own children and husbands have gotten us confused and perfect strangers have asked us if we were twins. I have loved having a "sister" for this last year, and I think that even though we no longer live just down the drive from each other, we will stay "sisters."

So, even if I gained nothing else from our year at Bethel – I did finally find my long-lost sister!

  • Genius in the making.

So is it normal for a one and a half year old to recognize her alphabet?

This evening Shaun and I sat in amazement as Lily correctly read off four out of seven capital letters printed across his shirt!

Where did she learn that?  I sure haven't been teaching her.

She did enjoy watching a Leapfrog movie called "The Letter Factory" when we were in Kentucky.  But that movie belonged to Ruthie and she hasn't seen it in over a month.  She also recently got a toddler computer game that has an alphabet activity on it - but we hardly ever play that particular game.

All I know is I am constantly amazed at what that girl picks up!  She's one smart cookie!

  • Musings

The weather today was lovely – sunny, 70s and breezy. Still, I found myself troubled much of the day with some nagging thought or emotion. It seemed that every breeze carried on it a hint of a memory that I couldn’t quite place. I thought perhaps I was being reminded of my time in Lithuania – the summer days there were so very much like the weather today. At other times I felt like I was being carried back to childhood, or high school, or maybe college.

As I washed my dishes, composing this piece in my head, it suddenly came to me.  It wasn’t a memory the wind was carrying – it was inspiration - my hidden muse.

The weather, or my day, or week, had triggered some deep down need to create and give expression to a voice just waiting to be heard. I can go for weeks, months and occasionally years without needing to write, and then the muse will hit and words simply come.

I am always amazed at what comes to life in such times – I trust this occasion will be no different.

  • Lazy Summer Days

I know that I really need to post a written update on here soon.  But since I am feeling so lazy, I opted to post my latest pictures of Lily instead.  She's cuter than anything I could write anyway!

  • Oh Baby!

So my sister-in-law asked me to accompany her on her visit to the midwife. Her midwife lives two hours away and she has been making her regularly scheduled visits alone or with her six-year-old daughter in tow. This trip however was scheduled for the day before she was due – and she was a little afraid she might go into labor on the way up or back. She asked me to go along "just in case."

Hmm, should I admit that I hesitated a bit before saying yes? I could just imagine myself trying not to panic as she went into labor. I also imagined myself getting us horribly lost if I was suddenly in charge of driving - I figured if Kelly was in labor she might not be able to give me directions! I tried to figure out what on earth I would do if for some crazy reason I had to deliver that baby along the road somewhere! (which wasn’t that far fetched a thought – Kelly has notoriously short labors and she was on baby number four…)

Eventually though, I agreed to go. And did Kelly go into labor?

    Yep!

But she was so calm about that whole thing that she didn’t even ask me drive! We were on our way home when the contractions started coming. And we made it home with plenty of time to spare. The new baby arrived around 8:00 that night.

I am now the proud aunt of another nephew – Isaac Wesley Hostetter. And boy is he cute! ; )

  • Mayday, mayday I need Maymay!

Maymay is Lily's pronunciation of Malin - it can also mean Ruthie, or Avery.  So I don't always know who Lily is asking for when she asks for Maymay - all I know is that none of them are here!

I wondered how Lily would do leaving them behind.  They were such good friends and since we lived so close we got to see them almost every day.  As soon as the girls would see each other they would squeal and run toward each other, hand out hugs all around, and then start playing.

Now that we are far apart, we spend a lot of time praying for Maymay (all three of them) and Roooaaaar. (Wesley always roared at Lily when he saw her, so she started referring to him as Rooaarr!)  Every night when I pray with Lily, the first people on her list to pray for are Maymay and Rooaar - and she is often still talking about them as I say goodnight and leave the room.

    They are missed.

  • Bethel

So did I mention that I moved from Bethel Church Rd to Bethel Church Rd?

Yep, I still live on the same road - just moved a couple of states over....

I just can't get away from Bethel.

Lily now has her very own copy of the Gilmore Girl's song. We get a kick out of watching her enjoy it every time we play it! Thanks Jeannie and Lisa for downloading it for her.
